The February Legislative Session is underway and the anti-PERS crowd is rushing forward with a series of attack on our retirement. There are four dangerous bills that we are watching:
HB 4070 Sponsored by Reps. Julie Parrish and Cedric Hayden – This bill would effectively eliminate pensions for all AFSCME members going forward, and put a cap on retirement benefits.
HB 4071 Sponsored by Reps. Julie Parrish and Cedric Hayden – This bill makes sweeping changes to our state worker’s healthcare plans without any input from AFSCME members.
SB 1561 Sponsored by Senators Winters, Baertschiger Jr, Boquist, DeBoer, Girod, Kruse, Linthicum, and Thomsen – This bill would further politicize our benefits by requiring legislative approval for collective bargaining agreements.
HB 4131 Sponsored by Rep. Nearman – Much like Julie Parrish’s bill, this legislation would effectively eliminate pensions for AFSCME members going forward.
While some of the sponsors are the usual suspects, like Rep. Julie Parrish and the “Freedom” Foundation’s favorite Rep. Mike Nearman, it is disappointing to see Senator Winters, who has been a respected moderate with a high number of PERS recipients in her district, join in these ridiculous attack. In addition to fighting back against these bills, our union will be focused on educating legislators on the damage done by SB 1067, which ended double medical coverage for spouses who both work for the state, advocating for agency funding, and reigning in the cost of prescription drugs.
Our Union’s political program is strong and we expect to defeat these bills but we need members to come out to Lobby Day and make their voice heard on these sorts of attacks. The difference you can make is huge!
You can register here for Lobby Day.
